  ‘But.’ Konrad paused, struggling to force the terrible words past his lips. ‘What if she is right? What if I will… break? Go mad? Become a monster?’

  ‘I refuse to let you break either. You have something those other Malykants probably did not, Konrad. We love you too much to let you fall apart.’ Nanda gripped his hand. It hurt, but it was a small, welcome pain.

  Konrad swallowed something that absolutely was not a lump in his throat. ‘Thank you.’
